 KANSAS CITY, MO — Jodi Wiemerslage of Hunt Electric Corporation and Midwest Region Director of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is excited to announce plans for the Midwest Region Fall Conference. The Midwest Region, known as the Heart of NAWIC, includes over 500 members, 18 chapters and spans nine states including Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Missouri and Kansas. The Fall Conference will be held October 25 – 26, 2019 at the Westin Marriott Crown Center in Kansas City, MO. The conference theme this year is “The City of Fountains”, using the visual streams in a fountain to highlight five core focus areas of growth for our members: Influence, Purpose, Value, Knowledge and Truth. “Conference sessions and speakers will motivate and enrich those who attend,” says Wiemerslage. “Education and camaraderie are key elements that make these conferences memorable empowering women in our industry with tools, ideas, motivation and peer support”. In addition to excellent speakers and networking, the culture of Kansas City is sure to beckon members from our chapters to attend. The Westin is in the heart of the Crown Center shopping and entertainment district, just across the street from the historic Union Station and the only WWI memorial museum in the United States. The conference agenda includes a variety of educational topics that include Safety, Technology and Legal issues in construction, in addition to practical session that will help members with skills to better build and run their chapters. Keynote and inspirational sessions including Eric Bordon who will share his poem “Ditch Digger” and the inspiration behind it. Closing the conference for the women in attendance is Diane Mike, the 2019-2020 NAWIC national president. Members of the hosting Kansas City Chapter #100 of the National Association of Women in Construction are hosting the conference. National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) launched the idea of Women in Construction Week as a way to bring visibility to women working in construction. WIC Week supports NAWIC's core purpose: "To enhance the success of women in the construction industry." In the early years WIC Week was mainly promoted and supported by the more than 100 local NAWIC chapters across the US. Today WIC Week is celebrated by just about everyone in the industry. :Less than 5 years ago, it would be rare to see a LinkedIn post from anyone other than NAWIC acknowledging WIC Week. Wow, have times changes. This past week, LinkedIn and Facebook were flooded with social medial posts from some of the largest General Contractors in the US, such as The Walsh Group, Mortenson, Gilbane, Barton Malow and more highlighting the women who work in their organizations with photos, personal success stories and testimonials. And it wasn't just large contractors; regional mid-size general contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers all showcased the women in their organizations. Partner association such as ABC and AGC added their considerable social media presence to the mis as well as companies such as Procore. And all NAWIC chapters stepped up their game this year with great events celebrating all week long. Why is this so important? Because there is so much opportunity in the industry, yet women only comprise 9% of the construction workforce. The looming labor shortage in the industry makes it imperative that we find a way to attract and retain women. Highlighting the success of women across many aspects of the industry is a great way to start. Continued efforts to encourage girls high school age and younger are vital as well. NCCER's Build Your Future campaign, Camp NAWIC and MAGIC Camp and Women in Trades outreach activities are all working to ensure the next generation sees a career in construction as a viable option. Let's continue to celebrate the amazing women who build!
